The Top
10 Things That Turn Affiliates Off
#
3 – The Image of the Product
When we’re in a brick & mortar store thinking about buying a
product, we hold the item in our hands, turn it over, look at the
packaging, look at similar items around it… and our eyes and hands tell
us things, like if it’s a quality product or that it’ll fall apart the
first time we use it, or if it’s a good value or not.
But when we’re shopping online, the only thing we have to go by is what
we see and feel, so we have to perceive quality and value before we buy.

|
|
We want to see what we’re getting
for our money.
We
want to see what’s in it for us.
|
|

|
Let’s say you wanted to buy a home gym and you
went to a site that sells fitness equipment and saw a picture of a
machine that’s right for you. You look at the picture, you look
at the price, you may even look at the details about the machine, but
you’ll probably start coming up with a list of reasons why you
shouldn’t spend the money, that you don’t have the room for it, that
you don’t have the time, etc., etc.
BUT… if the picture had a buff man or woman with the body you want in
the picture with the machine, like Bowflex does, instead you’d be thinking, I
gotta have that machine.
It’s like the picture sends a subliminal message: This could be you.
The same goes for dating sites – they all use pictures of happy couples
on their sites. Obviously, it’s not you in the picture, but
it could be.
And your eyes perceive the value – the “what’s in it for me?”
But what about products you can’t
touch?
Like an ebook?
|
 |
If you have an image that makes it look like a real
book with a
professionally-designed cover, your eyes perceive the value.
[Did ya catch the subliminal message on the cover of that ebook? If
I buy this book, I can get a pile of cash and a shiny sports car and
it’s easy too! Woo-hoo!! Where’s my credit card?]
Or a downloadable software?
|
 |
Or hours of downloadable audio
files?
Or a downloadable how-to
video?
|
 |
Even something you can’t physically touch can tell
you it has quality
and value if it looks like its real-world counterparts.

|
|
Occasionally, I’ll come across a
site where it looks like they took the easy and cheap route on their
product’s cover.
You better believe that turns affiliates (and potential customers!)
off.

If you really want to make big
money online
(who doesn’t?!),
DO NOT SKIMP on your product’s image!!
For a lousy 100 bucks, either hire a pro or
learn to do it yourself
(it really is easy!)!
|
|

|
TIPS:
Once you shrink an image to a
useable size on a website, you can
no longer read some of the text on
it.
Try to design your image so it can still be read without having to
be a huge file that takes a long time to load on the screen.
|
 |
Be sure you don’t lose image
quality – see
how the “RAPID” text near the top of this
box is fuzzy?
Keep an eye on your image quality while you’re designing it.

For Products You Can Touch
High-quality photos are the way to go. A professional, commercial
photographer knows angles and lighting and resolution and can give you
great pictures of your products. You just can’t get photos
like that at home with your own camera.
If you’re selling other people’s products
Do you think big companies, like Best Buy and Overstock.com, take their
own pictures of all those products? No – they get them from the
manufacturer, and so can you. Go to the websites for the
companies you work with and look for a link for sellers. If you
don’t find the info there, contact them.
No matter what you’re selling…
You need a good, professional-looking image of your
product that screams “quality” and “value.”
