Converting to a PDF
When
it
comes to ebooks, Adobe Acrobat’s PDF (Portable Document Format) is the
standard. Whether you’re selling a 200-page ebook or giving away
a 5-page special report, always use a PDF – it’s what buyers
expect.
[Over the years, I’ve encountered a couple ebooks that were in a .exe
format and with all the dangers lurking online, you can’t help but be
suspicious of anything that can execute anything on your computer, so
avoid these!]
There are a number of ways you can convert your Word™ (or whatever word
processor you're using) document into a PDF:
Adobe Acrobat
A few years ago I bought Adobe Acrobat™ for around $300 and when I’m
ready to convert something, all I have to do is click on its icon in
Word:

and in a matter of seconds, it’s done.
But it does have its drawbacks…

You know how Word puts those
little red and green squiggly lines under words and sentences it
doesn’t like? I have to go through the whole document
line-by-line and
click “Ignore” on each of them or else those squiggly lines will show
up in the
finished product.

If I name my project anything
with a space in it, like “My Bonus Ebook,” for example, after I convert
it, its name will be:
My%20Bonus%20Ebook.

A
few months ago I wrote a 130-page
ebook and when I converted it, Adobe added an ‘H’ before and after
every single link in the whole thing. [Maybe I need to get an
upgrade?] That ebook project landed on the back burner soon
after and I still haven't figured out how to fix it, but while working
on this site I discovered that if I copy something out of my HTML
editor and paste it into Word then convert it to a PDF, it doesn’t do
that. Hmmm….

Free PDF Converters
There are a number of websites that say they’ll convert your doc to a
PDF for free, but as we all know, nothing is free. They insert
ads into your document.
Let’s think about that for a
second. Say you bought an ebook for $67 and right smack in the
middle of it was an ad for something. Wouldn’t that sour your
impression of the ebook? Would you feel that this product had
value or would you suddenly think it was crap and want your money back?
This goes back to credibility. Don’t risk hurting yours just to
save a couple bucks.
PDF Creator
If you search on forums and discussion groups, you’ll see that lots of
people
have asked, “What do you use to convert to PDF’s?” and PDF Creator is the one most responders will
recommend.
I haven’t tried it so I can’t vouch for it but I can tell you that I
wish I had found it back when I bought Adobe – I could have saved big
bucks!] Download the free trial and check it out.
